Health, Livestock Health and Aqua Health.
Novartis Animal Health's livestock business was formerly known
as Novartis Animal Vaccines, Inc., which was formed in January
2002, incorporating the product lines of Grand Laboratories and
ImmTech, LLC. Operations are located in Larchwood, Iowa, and Bucyrus,
Kan. Novartis Animal Health's livestock business is part of the
U.S. arm of Novartis, a world leader in the research and development
of products to improve health and well-being. U.S. headquarters
are in Greensboro, N.C.
Novartis was formed in 1996 through the merger of Sandoz and Ciba,
two giants in the pharmaceutical industry. These companies trace
their history to 1758 when Johann Rudolph Geigy-Gemuseus began
trading in "Materials, Chemicals, Dyes and Drugs of All Kinds" in
Basel, Switzerland. A century later, the company that later became
Ciba got its start, also in Basel. And in 1886, the new Kern & Sandoz
Chemical Company was founded, again in Basel.
By the 1930s the companies had begun to expand their chemical
business into agriculture, with the development of pesticides and
insecticides. Ciba and Geigy merged in 1970, and throughout the
1970s and 1980 both Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz expanded their presence
in agriculture by diversifying into the seeds and herbicides sectors.
In 1996, Sandoz and Ciba came together as a new company, Novartis.
The name Novartis comes from the Latin words for "new skills," which
reflects the company's commitment to bringing innovative new products
to the marketplace. Novartis is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland
and operates in 140 countries.
