Pre-weaning/weaning
Beef Health Programs
Objective
- A value-added calf from every
cow at 45 days post-weaning
Challenges
- Increased risk of disease exposure
due to processing, commingling, shipping, weather changes, dust
- Increased stress on calves due
to changes in diet, separation from dam, handling
- Risk of sudden death caused by clostridial diseases like blackleg
Research shows the value of a well-planned pre-weaning/weaning
program. Data from the Texas A&M University Ranch-to-Rail program,
representing nine years and more than 17,000 head, shows:
- A $91.77 per-head difference in net income between sick cattle
and those remaining healthy
- Healthy cattle had an average daily gain of 2.96 vs. 2.66 for
cattle that got sick
- Carcass quality was highest for cattle that remained healthy
Novartis developed the ImmPact pre-weaning/weaning program to
help you maximize the number of cows producing healthy calves at
weaning. ImmPact integrates husbandry skills with
Novartis’ biologicals at specific, critical periods to minimize
diseases that affect cattle at certain stages of production. The
program gives you the flexibility to choose between a modified live
and inactivated vaccine approach.
