J5 Shield™
Dairy Cattle Vaccine
Product Information [pdf]
J5 Shield is recommended for use in healthy dairy cattle as an
aid in the prevention of endotoxemia caused by Escherichia coli.
E. coli is a primary pathogen responsible for coliform
mastitis – the most deadly type of mastitis. Bacteria enter the
teat, cause infection and release endotoxins that result in clinical
symptoms.
Coliform bacteria are present in 20 to 40 percent of clinical
mastitis cases. Most coliform cases occur with a sudden onset in
early lactation. Cows have a high fever, swollen quarter, loss
of appetite and appear dehydrated. An estimated 10 to 15 percent
of affected animals die. Animals that survive often have other
complications, such as reduced milk production, loss of the infected
quarter and delayed breeding.
Close animal contact, moist conditions and high milk production
all increase the need for an effective vaccine like J5 Shield.
Vaccination will not prevent bacteria from entering the teat end;
however, J5 Shield can help prevent endotoxic effects through an
enhanced immune response to E. coli. In a University of California-Davis
economic analysis, researchers found that dairy producers following
a J5 vaccination program could gain $32 to $57 net profit per cow
per lactation.
Research at the University of California School of Veterinary
Medicine, Tulare, Calif., found that cows immunized with J5 Shield
were less severely affected by endotoxin challenge. Cows vaccinated
with J5 Shield had only a mild transient illness compared to the
unvaccinated control animals. In safety trials, J5 Shield administered
at 10 times the label dose caused no adverse reactions.
As with any vaccination or prevention program, J5 Shield should
not be expected to cure existing mastitis cases. Ask your veterinarian
for guidance on the best vaccination program for your operation.
