Salmo Shield® Live
Swine Vaccine
Swine salmonellosis is a disease that is difficult to diagnose
and is often overlooked in economic importance. Approximately 60
percent
of cases are caused by Salmonella cholerasuis, a common bacteria
in swine operations. It is a systemic disease that is characterized
by pneumonia, liver abscesses and enteritis.
Salmo Shield Live
is a modified live vaccine that aids in the prevention and control
of salmonellosis. In a challenge study, pigs vaccinated with Salmo
Shield Live had 0%
mortality
(death
loss)
compared to 48% mortality
in
non-vaccinates. Vaccinates also had significantly higher weight
gain and lower clinical
scores than non-vaccinates.
A single 1-mL dose given at three
weeks of age or older helps protect healthy pigs. It should be
given in herds with a history
of salmonellosis
or in feeder operations where carrier animals are common.
